The Whitsunday region is located in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef, on the central east coast of Queensland, Australia. Airlie Beach situated between Mackay and Townsville, and is approximately 630km south of Cairns and 1100km north of Brisbane.
Jetstar and Virgin operate flights daily to Proserpine (Whitsunday Coast Airport) from throughout Australia. A local coach service, courtesy coaches from accommodation houses, and taxi and hire cars are available from the airport to Proserpine, Cannonvale, Airlie Beach and Shute Harbour.
Yes you can swim in the Whitsunday waters however we recommend wearing a full length lycra suit during the higher risk period (October – May) which reduces the risk of stings and is great sun protection too.
The Airlie Beach Swimming Lagoon, located on the Airlie Beach foreshore, is a popular and safe year round swimming spot.
There is a local bus service which runs regularly from Shute Harbour to Proserpine, with many stops in Airlie Beach and Cannonvale.
Taxi buses may be used for transporting small groups and chartered buses can be used for larger groups.
Many tour operators provide a courtesy transfer.
